Our Story
Our Heritage
For more than 140 years, Fenwick has believed that shopping should be inspiring, personal, and thoughtfully curated. Founded by John James Fenwick in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1882, we remain a family-owned department store group guided by the values established from the beginning: exceptional quality, considered choice and genuine service. Today, we bring together womenswear, menswear, beauty, and home brands from around the world, alongside restaurants, expert services, and memorable experiences. While retail has evolved, our commitment to thoughtful curation and personal service remains unchanged.
John James Fenwick

Born in Richmond, North Yorkshire, in 1846, John James Fenwick (JJ) opened JJ Fenwick, Mantle Maker and Furrier in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1882.
Working alongside two assistants, JJ built a reputation for quality, personal service, and a discerning eye for product. As the business grew, so did its presence on Northumberland Street, where our Newcastle flagship still stands today.
When JJ's son Fred joined the business in 1890, he brought back inspiration from Parisian department stores, helping shape the Fenwick experience for generations to come.
Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Fenwick continues to evolve while staying true to the values established by its founder over 140 years ago.
